I like notetaking as a habit, and I have some stories to share that I find interesting
- In elementary school, I have no sense of studying, no sense of reviewing before the exam, and of course, no sense of taking notes. I constantly do above average, but never close to the top. I ended up in a mid-tier public school
- In middle school, I was paied attention to peiople taking notes, and I preprared notebooks for various subjects. At that time, my notes followed my personal style: very detailed, very cramped together
Here is my note-taking style compared to some other common STEM notetakers
- I like to use colors. It’s really useful to human eyes with just a few bits of extra information. I never use excessive colors, though.
- Strong sense of connection: I believe an 2D piece of paper/iPad is rarely sufficient to project the principal components of a concept. I use arrows to connect the higher dimensions
- Handwritten vs typed
- In diagram heavy classes: I tend to use handwritten notes in Notability
- In concept/code heavy classes: I tend to type in Obsidian
- There’s a significant portion of the class in CSEE that falls awkwardly in-between… Examples include Embedded Systems and Computer Networks… Sometimes I gave up and conform to the slides…
- Another in-between is math-heavy classes. I have a LaTeX workflow that enables me to type and highlight equations matching the pace of the lecturer (E. ML)
- Beautiful vs ugly: The organization of my notes tend to be correlated to the organization of the class…
Over the years, the role of traditional note-taking is fading away, from posted lecture slides (as opposed to old profs lecturing chalk on blackboard) and AI summary tools. In terms of studying, AI is oftentimes more effective. Note-taking becomes more of a habit, rather than a critical part of my study. Nevertheless, it still pre-prepares myself sufficiently for exam prep.
